The Melbourne suburbs are full of brushtail possums which seem to have adapted well to suburban living. Like a lot of Australian native animals they seem very cute, slow, dimwitted and defenseless. They love to eat bread and jam. Pictured is a brushtail possum named "Stumpy" because he has half a tail and one blind eye. He visited the garden for many years then vanished for many months and turned up again with a stiff front leg. Despite all of the injuries, Stumpy lived for about another year before finally vanishing forever in early 2000. New generations of brushtails continue to circulate through the garden in the evening and leave a trail of chewed fruit and peel taken from local trees.
