09-Mar-2007 The new experimental Photo Database page can be used to search through the Nancy Street photo database for specific events where photos were taken or for specific subjects who are in the photos.
04-Mar-2007 Many of the Gallery and Pets thumbnail images and links are generated by a new software utility that manages the Nancy Street photo database. The utility can search and tag photos by event and subject and generate HTML tables of thumbnail images. See the Other Social Events page for an example. The arrival of the Canon digital camera meant that so many photos could be taken so easily that I had to write this custom utility to manage the large and growing number of photos.

18-Feb-2007 A mixture of new photos taken with the Canon EOS 400D: Nancy Street, Birds, The Kittens, St Kilda Festival 2007 and the electric string quartet Fourplay. A new Movie Club gallery section.

Nov-2006 Nothing to report in November, also due to lack of hobby time.

Oct-2006 No updates in October due to lack of hobby time.

03-Sep-2006 Some comments and a few pictures of a holiday on Lindeman Island. If you're a fan of nice wine, then you may want to read about the tragedy of the house wine.
03-Sep-2006 Great photos taken by Warren of John's birthday scenic flight in the Diamond Star.
01-Sep-2006 The Anti-Football League is returning! Visit the new web site and join the real AFL to keep yourself sane before 2006 grand final fever mutates into annual mass insanity.
01-Sep-2006
  • There was no activity on the web site during August due to a lack of hobby time and a forgettable 7 day holiday on Lindemann Island (Queensland).
  • All Visual Studio 2003 Framework 1.1 projects under the Computers page are being upgraded to Visual Studio 2005 and Framework 2.0. There are some dreadful problems in the conversion, but once it's all over, notices will appear in the project home pages.
  • Some kitten photos, social event photos and Kinks audio files and cover images are all waiting to be added to the site.

23-Jul-2006 For the interest of software developers only: The NTag (audio file tagging) library is becoming quite stable and powerful. Onyx V5 is now capable of reading and updating most types of ID3 tagged mp3 files.
01-Jul-2006 Little activity in the site due to lack of hobby time. The Kinks pages and collection are pending update with some new rare audio files and dozens of rare album covers (sorry for the delay Slavko!). A newspaper photo of our new kittens (on loan from the Hampton Street Ver Clinic). Whitie and Tabbie are on the right, the sister on the left went to a different family.

06-May-2006 The NTag library finally seems to be in a working state. Anyone who previously downloaded tagnetlib should consider it to be obsolete and replace it with NTag. The NTag page contains a download of the full project with a large NUnit test suite and a demo forms app that calls NTag to list file tags in a grid. Also included is the skeleton of a planned replacement for the old Onyx application.
04-May-2006 Server Statistics have been updated to include April 2006.

23-Apr-2006   The NTag library is well underway and almost working as a replacement for the old tagnetlib library. A replacement for Onyx is also underway, but it's only a skeleton at the moment.
09-Apr-2006 All of the software projects on the Computers page have been carefully tested to ensure that they compile and run immediately after they have been downloaded and unzipped. Many of these downloads previously had some missing files or wrong defaults, which weren't fatal problems in the hands of an experienced developer, but they would have been quite irritating. If you've reviously downloaded any software projects, it mght be wise to get fresh copies.
15-Apr-2006 My old Targa 19" monitor is replaced with a 17" Flatron L1750SQ flat screen. Thank heavens for the extra desk space that is now available. The Targa ran at 1600x1280 resolution, which cannot be reached by the Flatron which has a limit of 1280x1024, but the crisp clear picture outweighs the loss of screen space. I really thank heavens that the age of the gigantic CRT monitor is nearly over. The weight, the space and the heat of the damn things was apocalyptic. This flat screen revolution is one of the most rapid and stunning the recent history of computers. All I want now is that extra bit of resolution to sqeeze more onto the screen - Greg

26-Mar-2006 More pictures of the New Kittens. Complete set of photos from the Legendary Stardust Cowboy 20th anniversary fan club meeting
12-Mar-2006 The Computers section has been moved from under the Hobbies page and has been promoted to a top-level section present on all button bars at the top of pages.
05-Mar-2006 About 35% of the Nancy Street book library is now entered in a database and a raw listing is available sorted by author then title. Data entry is a slow and tedious process.

23-Feb-2006 The zip file of csutylib_proj.zip has been fixed to included the NUnit and Forms driver projects which were accidentally missing from the zip command.

08-Jan-2006 A new Visitor Book has been created.
03-Jan-2006 Greg starts a new permanent job as a software developer at Volante.

08-Aug-2005 Nine new files bring the Kinks Collection to 574 mp3 files.
02-Aug-2005 Server Statistics have been updated to include Jul 2005. The inactivity in July was caused by work pressure and a holiday in Rarotonga from 20-27 July.

04-Jul-2005 Server Statistics and daily spam counts have been updated to include Jun 2005. Virus counts are now merged into the spam counts.

22-Jun-2005
  • The Nancy Street finally drops Telstra as our ADSL provider due to their absurdly high cost. Our new ISP is People Telecom, who provide equivalent services (as well as a fixed IP) for half the price of Telstra. It takes 4 hours to get the broadband services completely reconfigured after the changeover.
  • The Kinks Collection has been updated with some new rare tracks and the album cover gallery is still being updated.
  • Nancy Street has a Samsung SF-345TP Inkjet Fax machine on the main home phone line. It's tragic to have to buy a piece of equipment that will soon be obsolete (praying for the day when all these ancient communication systems will be subsumed by integrated digital services).
05-Jun-2005
  • A very old and frail Meep vanished without a trace on 2nd June. Now we are only 2 cats.

22-May-2005

25-Apr-2005 A .NET command line utility called resxtract to extract binary resources from xml resource (resx) files.

26-Jan-2005 Australia Day! (who gives a toss?) The Nancy Street computer room is stripped bare and moved to the old kitchen (that will become a bedroom) so that the front of the house can have the floors polished. The ADSL modem/router and hub are hanging from the picture rail by string and the cables are strung across the ceiling into the spare room. Renovation pictures coming soon.
20-Jan-2005 Nancy Street finally has a colour laser printer, an Epson AL-C900. Dick Smith Powerhouse in Southland was selling this as a part of the old stock for $AU594. The Canon LBP-4i paper rollers broke a few months ago and the Epson Stylus 400 is a piece of plasic junk whch eventually deteriorated in quality. It's a pleasure to throw out the old printers and replace them.
13-Jan-2005 The full project and documentation is available for a Forms User Control called FolderExplore that simulates the appearance and behaviour of the Windows Explorer folder view.

28-Dec-2004 The Opus ASP.NET web application and opusdb web service remained unfinished and unchanged for two years, so they have been removed from the site. A replacement web interface to the Nancy Street music library will return one day when hobby time permits. In the meantime use the Quick Search page.

12-Nov-2004 Full project and source is available for duplib, a library that scans the file system for duplicate files. A driver Forms application is included.

30-Oct-2004 The Pinnacle PCTV video capture card is finally ripped out of the PC to end my suffering. See the updated comments with the warning: Do not buy a Pinnacle Pro PCTV capture card under any circumstances.
23-Oct-2004 The contents of all data discs of music and video files in the Nancy Street library are now listed under the Data Disc Contents page. There are over 120 web pages that list the contents of each disc. The pages are generated automatically by a utility and are not designed for human browsing, they are intended to be indexed by search engines.

01-Aug-2004 The Cult Music collection now includes 291 new files from Fons in Rotterdam. There are some hypnotically bizarre albums in Fons' collection. See the Directory List of Fon's files.

03-Apr-2004 Server Statistics and daily spam counts have been updated to include March 2004. Music database listings and Site Information have also been updated.

24-Mar-2004 The old "Stuff-Ups and DIsasters" page has been generalised into the Development Blog and split into sub-pages for each major incident. The pages mostly contain highly technical discussions that will be of interest to developers.

13-Dec-2003 Recording the 78 rpm discs is complete.
09-Dec-2003

New Gallery and Cat Photos: Backie, Bailey, Squeek, Meep, Fluff, Kitten and lunch at a winery with Jean Paul.

06-Dec-2003 The Development Blog has a new item about ASP.NET development and a trap related to the CreateChildControls method.
04-Dec-2003

All previous content in this site related to computers and software has has been collected together in a dedicated section under Computers.

The new Computers section contains historical anecdotes and pictures, highly technical "blog" style discussions and sample programs of various types. The projects, source code and executables are available for free download for some of the programs. I hope some of the utilities will be of use to other developers and I welcome feedback.

03-Dec-2003 Ooops! The DynDNS updater failed for a couple of days due to an accidental configuration problem and the web sites were probably unavailable.

08-Nov-2003 The Music Quick Search facility has been expanded to include a search through the Nancy Street Jukebox files.

21-Oct-2003 The Music main page is rearranged and expanded slightly so that links to album cover lists and special collections are in a separate group.
19-Oct-2003 Another weird problem found by accident: The Album Covers page was corrupted, perhaps during testing. It's fixed now, but it's still just a dumb list that could be made neater and smarter.
13-Oct-2003 The MP3 Jukebox directory listings are back again after being empty for over a week due to moving the files to a new mapped drive and forgetting to update the web pages.
08-Oct-2003 The Development Blog page is updated to explain how Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition stuffed-up the Nancy Street network in strange ways. Bizarre problems occurred with IIS, ASP.NET, CVS Server, 16-bit app compatibility and the a Remoting app.
07-Oct-2003 Some new additions to the Cult Music collection, but the MP3 files remain offline due to quota overflow.
01-Oct-2003

MP3 downloads from the Cult Music page are temporarily available because the high hit-rates are driving the monthly quota over the limit. Possible solutions are being investigated.

The web server is active again after being offline for over a week due to a quota overflow in September. The excess totaled to 74.62MB which will add an extra $10.37 on the next bill.

30-Sep-2003

A new Development Blog page is created to hold stories of the strange events that unfold at Nancy Street following hardware and software upgrades. The latest one being a failed server boot disk and a flat battery.

21-Sep-2003 If you want a football free Grand Final day next Saturday, have a look at the Anti-Football League page. Come along to the Marine Hotel in Brighton on the 27th for some football-free casual wining, dining and conversation.
04-Sep-2003 A new piece of Cult Music for the collection.

28-Aug-2003

Startling news and updates about the server upgrade and router problems are revealed. See the Development Blog page.

21-Aug-2003 Scans of a rare 1970s Australian LP titled A Matter of Time by Brisbane band Railroad Gin are added to the Covers Collection (the images are quite large).
10-Aug-2003 The first pictures of Blackie arrive. The Other Social Events page includes a July 2003 dInner at a Korean restaurant with Peter and Anne and friends.
06-Aug-2003 As an experiment, the News Server on the Nancy Street server was activated last night. After replacing the default groups with some new ones and lowering the huge default size limits it all seems to work perfectly. I have not thought of any specific use for a news server, but I'll leave it running anyway. Point your news reader to news.orthogonal.com.au.
03-Aug-2003 The following pages include experimental JavaScript code to produce the effect of "folding groups" by clicking the and images next to section headings: Hi-Fi Equipment, Cult Music, Digitising Vinyl. The script only seems to work with IE. Does anyone know how to get the effect of [obj].style.display = 'none'/[null] working across all popular browser?
02-Aug-2003 The Nancy Street cat count increments to 6 with the arrival of Blackie.
01-Aug-2003 Site Information and Server Statistics have been updated to include July. Updates to this site remain infrequent due to long hours writing a commercial web site to report upon building industry data.

30-Jul-2003

The Nancy Street network is upgraded from old coax cable and multiple network cards to use a router. See the Development Blog page for details.

20-Jul-2003 Between 13-20 July the Nancy Street server hardware and software were upgraded significantly. The story is rather frightening and it might be of interest to other developers. See the Development Blog page for details.

03-Jun-2003 The Kinks Collection is complete.
02-Jun-2003 The MP3 Jukebox page was too large so it was divided into 8 sub-pages.

10-May-2003 The Kinks Collection is complete.

07-May-2003

Many Gallery changes:

06-May-2003 All popup windows in this site are consistently linked to a style sheet.
04-May-2003 The contents of the new Site Information page is generated programmatically from the web site source directory. Included in the page are totals by file type and a "table of contents" tree of all useful files in the site.
02-May-2003 Technical Note -- All mailto tags in this site are now generated by JavaScript. This prevents spam address harversters from pulling email addresses out of the site. For an example of how this works, open the Contacts page and view the HTML source; you will not see any email addresses in the page, you will see <JavaScript> tags and calls instead.

28-Apr-2003 A new Album Cover subsection: Yes.
27-Apr-2003 A new Album Cover subsection: Kate Bush.
27-Apr-2003
26-Apr-2003

Some legendary additions to the Covers collection:

25-Apr-2003 The Kinks page has been updated and includes links to a formatted Collection Listing and an Album Cover Gallery. The collection now seems to be complete except for one bonus track song (which will arrive sometime in the coming weeks via CD from Yugoslavia).
25-Apr-2003 The Beatles Collection page has been updated to include bootlegs.
24-Apr-2003 The Cult Music page has 4 new entries for 2003..
22-Apr-2003 The Pets page has been divided into sub-pages for Cats, Birds and Native Wildlife.
16-Apr-2003 A section is added the to Stanisław Lem page about obtaining a Polish publication of his cybernetic fairy tales The Cyberiad (Cyberiada). There is a English-Polish translation challenge within.
01-Apr-2003 The start of a new billing month brings the domain back online after being down for 6 days when the usage reached 97.5% of the 3GB/month quota.

28-Mar-2003 New Gallery section: Scans of the LP covers of Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake, a classic album by The Small Faces.
27-Mar-2003 New Gallery section: 1970s Hi-Fi Brochures - Scans of Hi-Fi equipment brochures and magazines, including some that have aged poorly. See the Aug-1977 review of the incredible $18,000 Musecom II, a grand piano sized "computer" with built-in keyboard and line-printer for direct music transcription. By the mid 90s the Musecom had been replaced by PC "notation software" costing around $200. At Nancy Street we use Musicator 2.14.
19-Mar-2003 New Gallery item: Cotton Club Orchestra. New Gallery items at the top of the Other Social Events page.
12-Mar-2003 The Old Hi-Fi Equipment sections includes scans from a dbx 128 sales brochure.
06-Mar-2003 The Web Statistics pages showed that the Album Covers page has been generating a huge number of hits over the last 2 months. So many hits in fact that I've had to close the web site overnight to keep within the Telstra 3GB/month cap. An examination of the referer field of the IIS logs indicates that the page is being referenced from the Google search engine (images.google.com). I emailed the Google support staff to ask about this and they said the page was not found in their indexes. The non-stop hits continued, so I took the brute-force step of renaming the directory containing the Album Covers page and images in the hope that this would slow the throughput.

08-Feb-2003 The Hobby - Movies page has some crude content.
06-Deb-2003 Added: Book covers for: Niven & Pournelle, Michael Moorcock, Arthur C Clarke.

31-Jan-2003 New Gallery Item: Superman Supacomic covers.

20-Nov-2002 Large numbers of files and directories in the web site have been renamed. This was done to give more meaningful names where possible and to follow the IIS convention of having a primary file in each directory with a default name (index.htm in this site). This means URLs to this site can specify the directory name without the need to append the file name. For example, the Information page can be entered as http://www.orthogonal.com.au/info without the need to append /info.htm. The 404 error page has been modified to warn people of the name changes.
11-Nov-2002 Updated music lists: Covers, CDs.
04-Nov-2002 Someone in the UK at IP 217.169.18.34 bulk downloaded every MP3 file from the Cult Music page, thereby using so much monthly broadband quota that the whole web site was shut down for 3 weeks.

14-Oct-2002 Godley & Creme discography updated.
